Our April merchant spotlight is Wisam, “Sam” Mihtar, owner of Atlantic Grill & Deli.
Originally from California, Sam began his career by working in other people’s delis in Queens. He decided to open up his first business on Atlantic Avenue with the help of his partners. “This is my first business. I’m lucky to be here.”
Sam’s Deli has quickly become a community space where folks stop by to have one of the deli’s signature sandwiches and get to know their neighbors. These types of interactions led to a friendship between Sam and a local comedian, Christopher Isaacson, which is how Bodega Comedy–an exclusive comedy show held inside the deli–was born.
“When we first opened up this deli, Chris came into the store and said ‘Do you mind shooting a video with me?’ He was one of the good ones that came in and introduced himself. We did the first video, then the second video, then we did one that went viral,” Sam explained.
Christopher has experience throwing comedy shows in unconventional spaces with his co-host Vikrant Sunderlal. After a series of successful pop–up comedy shows in apartments, they thought it was a good idea to have one at Atlantic Grill & Deli. “We were having a conversation one day and he said ‘You know what, we should shoot a show in here’.”
The first Bodega Comedy show happened in February, with demand far outweighing the deli’s capacity. Sam shared “It was something crazy…we didn’t expect it to be outsold.”
Sam said he could go on and on sharing memorable moments he’s had with customers. “What makes my day is when I see the reviews. It’s someone anonymous, that puts a smile on my face when I see them.”
Sam has been a friend and community partner to the BID and our staff since day one. He offers food and coffee to our hard-working clean team, a gesture that shows how community-oriented Sam is.
“Come in and experience it yourself,” says Sam, who will welcome you with open arms and a big smile. Atlantic Grill & Deli is open every day from 7 AM to 10 PM.

🚧Working hard to keep the rats away
🌳Last week, we began our Rat Mitigation work on some of our tree pits. Adding mesh underneath the pit ensures that rats can’t burrow and make holes underground. Our @nycsmallbiz Small BID grant made this work possible. As part of the city and state’s joint New York plan these grants put resources directly into community organizations across all five boroughs, empowering local residents to improve the livability, cleanliness, and safety of their neighborhoods

🌸This week, @thehort did their spring planting in our Hoyt Street planters, and gave us four new ones on 4th Avenue! They bring some much-needed color to this side of the corridor and brighten up even the rainiest days!
