We sat down with Sixto Fuentes, owner of @elzasonnyc1 , a lively and authentic Mexican restaurant at 491 Atlantic Avenue 🇲🇽. In 1997 at 17 years old, he emigrated from Mexico and planned to study to become an accountant. It was not to be: in a tragic twist of fate, Sixto’s older brother, who worked in Manhattan’s restaurant industry and supported him, passed away shortly after his arrival in 1998. In honor of his brother’s memory, Sixto decided to pursue culinary school.

Prior to cooking in his home country’s dishes, French cooking led him to Atlantic Avenue. “I have a very close friend–she’s a French lady–her name is Meryl. She worked at @bacchusbistrowine and she goes, ‘We are looking for a chef’ and I said ‘I’m not looking for a job!’ Well that little conversation put me in Bacchus and I was there for 14 years.”

While at Bacchus, (409 Atlantic Avenue) the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. “El Zason basically came around because of the pandemic.” When restaurants were shutting down citywide, Sixto asked his boss and owner of Bachhus, Bruno, if he could do a takeout only Mexican food pop-up for a few months, and Bruno agreed.

Through his close neighborhood relationships, Sixto made a brick and mortar space for El Zason a reality in October of 2021. Sixto’s biggest advocates in his pursuit of opening his restaurant were his customers. Sixto is proud that he has retained his original team at El Zason since it opened, and the restaurant is also family-run.

When asked about what is next, Sixto is eager to grow. “We’re looking for a new spot. We want to expand. This neighborhood is a priority for us 100%. I want to stay here as long as I have a life. Can my life be easier in Mexico? Yes. It’s my own country, my own language. But why go when I’ve fought so much for something here? I have a lot more ideas to bring and I know it’s going to be good. America is a country of opportunities. You work hard, you do everything right, and you’re going to get it.”

El Zason is a delicious neighborhood joint. Be sure to come eat Monday through Thursday from 11AM-11PM and Friday through Sunday from 11AM-1AM. ❤️
