Merchant Update – Winter 2013

Happy New Year Atlantic Ave BID merchants! Here is a quick update on the BID’s recent and upcoming activities:

Merchant Meeting: 9:30am on Wednesday January 23rd at Building on Bond – 112 Bond Street.

Please come to our next merchant meeting on Wednesday January 23rd. The agenda is 1) Brainstorming merchant events for 2013; 2) Advertising vs Public Relations – what works best?;  3) Discussing Park Smart program for the BID area. RSVP to jszende@atlanticavebid.org.

Park Smart

One of Atlantic Avenue’s long-time merchants – Charlie Sahadi – started an initiative one year ago to increase turnover in our parking spots by raising the price per hour. We have subsequently linked up with the City’s Park Smart program to do this in a more sophisticated way. They have a program to charge people less for short stays and more for long stays. The typical shopper will not pay any more for staying one hour or less but the person who is wasting a spot all day long will pay more and will be discouraged from staying all day. The proposed rates are: $0.50 for 30 minutes; $1.25 for 1 hour; $2.25 for 1.5 hours; and $3.50 for 2 hours.

Dine in Brooklyn – BK’s Restaurant Week
– The dates are Monday March 11 – Thursday March 21 and restaurants can choose to participate for lunch, dinner, or brunch by offering special three course meals for $20.13 for lunch and $28 for dinner (tax, tip, & drinks not included).

– Restaurants can choose to offer ‘two can dine’ for the same prices as well, if they are at a lower price point that makes more sense.

– Restaurants can also choose to limit the offer to a limited number of patrons who reserve.

– Since this is the 10th anniversary of restaurant week some establishments are offering a $10 or 10% discount for the patron’s next visit.

Please let us know as soon as possible (jszende@atlanticavebid.org) so that we can begin to create buzz around Atlantic BID restaurants!

Holiday lights and Small Business Saturday

The BID was really happy to bring Atlantic Avenue’s first holiday light display starting at the end of November through the beginning of January. The 3D Snowflakes were designed by Ed Migliaccio’s company Illuminations and were warmly appreciated by customers andmerchants. The lights were up in time for Small Business Saturday that included a trolley, carolers, a lighting ceremony, discounts from American Express, and lots of giveaway Small Business Saturday merchandise including shopping bags, t-shirts, and buttons. Other holiday programming included another trolley day on December 9th and a staying open late shopping night on December 22nd.

Upcoming events: Valentine’s Day and Dine in Brooklyn

The BID wants to support special business events coming up. In particular, we are looking for any business doing special Valentine’s Day sales/meals/events and/or participating in restaurant week. If we have enough participation then the BID will invest in some extra publicity to get even more media attention for Atlantic Avenue. Please send any information about what you are doing to me (jszende@atlanticavebid.org).
