Come to the Atlantic Avenue Children’s Story Reading Series!

Bring children 3-5 to hear stories by local authors. Winners of the Atlantic Avenue Children’s Literature Contest will read original stories along with selections from their favorite picture books. Judging panel includes Brooklyn-native Bruce Degan, illustrator of ‘The Magic School Bus’ series. Kids will decide the Kids Choice Award by voting for their favorite story. Free hot chocolate provided by Sahadi’s along with bookmarks for all but space is limited. Please RSVP on to reserve a spot at one or more of the readings.  Saturday mornings December 7, December 14, and December 21 at the following locations:

Bruce Degen              Illustrator, ‘The Magic School Bus’ series

Nancy Doniger          Illustrator, “Lemonade, and Other Poems Squeezed from a Single Word”

Nancy Doniger has illustrated several books for children, including Lemonade: and Other Poems Squeezed from a Single WordGingersnaps: Daily Affirmations for African American Children, and Morning, Noon and Night: Poems to fill your Day.  She has created many illustrations for New York Times, as well as for the Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn for Peace, and Brooklyn Free Space Preschool, and the Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn. Nancy lives and works in Brooklyn, where she has raised two children, a tortoise, and a very large poodle.

Melissa Guion           Author and Illustrator, “Baby Penguins Everywhere!”

Melissa Guion lives and works in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Her debut picture book Baby Penguins Everywhere! was selected for The Original Art 2012, an exhibition of the year’s best picture book illustration. Baby Penguins Love Their Mama, her second book, arrives from Philomel in January 2014. Melissa also writes for Brooklyn’s own Tom Tom Magazine.

Rachel Orr                Agent at Prospect Agency

Rachel Orr works at Prospect Agency, which takes its name from the picturesque park in Brooklyn.  She represents authors and illustrators on a wide range of projects.  Some of her picture-book clients include author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen (Chicks Run Wild), illustrator Cori Doerrfeld (Bardyard Baby), illustrator Leeza Hernandez (Never Play Music So Close to the Zoo), and author Todd Tarpley (Ten Tiny Toes).  Originally from suburban Pennsylvania, Rachel fell in love with Brooklyn when she read Barbara Cohen’s The Carp in the Bathtub.  The foreign concepts of brownstones and subways thrilled her as a child, and continue to thrill her today.

Namrata Tripathi       Executive Editor at Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Namrata Tripathi is Executive Editor at Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster’s Children’s Publishing. Prior to S&S, she held positions at HarperCollins Children’s Books and Disney-Hyperion. She acquires fiction and nonfiction picture books, literary-commercial middle grade and YA novels, and select graphic novels. She acquired and edited the New York Times #1 BestsellingOlivia and the Fairy Princesses by Ian Falconer and the Printz Medal and Morris Award-winning novel Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley. She is interested in finding fresh, bold picture books and honest, hilarious, or heartbreaking (or all three!) novels with unique voices and diverse characters

Tamson Weston        Freelance children’s book editor

Tamson Weston is the founder of Tamson Weston Books, an editorial consultancy specializing in books for kids from age 0 to 18, and a published picture book author. She has 15 years experience in the Children’s Book industry, the bulk of those as an acquiring editor at such esteemed houses as Disney Hyperion, HarperCollins and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Tamson lives and works in Brooklyn. Judging Criteria:
•       Inherent connection in the story to the neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights and/or Cobble Hill in Brooklyn
•       Appropriate story/content for children ages 3 to 5
•       Emotional connection
•       Writing quality
•       Uniqueness
•       Read-aloud potential

Ineligible: previously published children’s authors as well as volunteers, staff, or board members of the Atlantic Avenue BID.
