Atlantic Avenue’s First Park(ing) Day A Great Success

Atlantic Avenue BID (Business Improvement District) merchants showed off their design prowess and the flexibility of urban space that went from street to park to street within a single day. These ‘pop-up’  parks added Brooklyn flare to Park(ing) Day festivities globally on Friday, September 19, 2014 from 3pm to 8pm.

The festivities spanned the length of the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) from the East River to Fourth Avenue, and include participating stores ranging from plant stores like Floral Heights that did a full ornate formal table setting, to Dig, which did a beautiful garden gazebo display, complete with “gardentini” their new invention with plants in fancy glasses. Jarontiques, a mid-Century modern furniture store that showed the film 2001: A Space Odyssey with the perfect period-1960s furniture setting. Flor a carpet design squares store created games like hopscotch and checkers out of carpet tiles. Bright Lyons – a mid-century modern furniture store set up a chic patio display and neighbor Collier West showed off their electic mix of home wears in their tiny perfect on-street apartment.

“From furniture to fashion, from gardens to galleries Atlantic Avenue will show visitors how Park(ing) Spaces can be a beautiful canvas for fashion, flowers and design. These merchant-designers are thinking outside the box. This is the beginning of an un-missable annual tradition,” said Josef Szende the Executive Director of the Atlantic Avenue BID, which organized the event on Atlantic Avenue.

“Parking Day gives New Yorkers an opportunity to take another look at public space and think about ways to reshape our cities on a more human scale,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, which works to guide people through NYC’s Street Activity Permit process. “Turning a parking space into a ‘parklet’ demonstrates how even a busy commercial corridor like Atlantic Avenue can be made more livable by offering residents and visitors enriching places to play, gather and connect.”
